Little writers with big ideas

Discover the joy of reading and journey to new worlds with your boy. Reading allows us to uncover new information and stretch our imagination. Reading can be an immensely enjoyable activity that our boys enjoy alone or with their parents. However, critical reading goes beyond reading for pleasure. Join us in learning how we can nurture critical reading skills and practice good reading habits.

Our young Saints are highly imaginative and expressive. In this session, we learn how we can support our boys to generate and convey ideas in a clear and relevant manner. Apart from using a wide range of vocabulary, we explore holistic thinking strategies, which can help boys to evaluate their own ideas and express themselves clearly in their writing.

Equipping Parents to develop positive habits for Holistic Thinker & Skilled Communicator

To help children in their foundation years to build up their confidence in solving word problems, it is important for parents to understand how problem solving is taught in school. This session focuses on understanding problem sums (and developing the habit of careful reading) and applying useful techniques and heuristics (model-drawing, listing, guess-and-check) coupled with MTV thinking routines to excel in Math. You will also be given time for a hands-on practice during the session.

Learning Chinese through games

Boys are kinetic learners who like to learn through hands-on game or activities. In addition it is important to build a firm foundation which will aid in his learning of Chinese Language. Thus our teachers have designed a series of activities to enhance students’ learning in Chinese. For example, learning the character strokes through aerobics(笔画操), learning Hanyu Pinyin through songs, hand gesture and games, and revising Chinese character through flash card game (字宝宝游戏). Parents will be able to play these learning games with their children after the workshop, to make their home learning more interesting and engaging.

Getting it Just Write!

Aristotle said that excellence was not an act but a habit. How can we provide our boys with various opportunities to nurture holistic thinking and develop good writing habits? This session explores how we can equip boys with the skills to develop and explore ideas in an original and relevant manner. These ideas can then be effectively organized in a logical and coherent manner. Join us in learning how we can nurture good writing habits and promote the love for writing in our boys.

Pictures as stimulus for comprehension

According to surveys and researches, the main factor that causes our pupils to dislike reading Chinese books is the difficulty in recognising Chinese words. This layer of difficulty has prevented them from understanding or appreciating stories written in Chinese. As teachers and parents, we fully recognised that before we can convince or motivate the pupils to read up Chinese books, we must find ways to take away this challenge, so that the pupils can enter into the world of stories written in Chinese, motivating them to learn Chinese in the process.

As the saying goes “A picture speaks of a thousand words”. In this session, we will be sharing on how to use pictures in pictorial books to tell complex stories presented in Chinese words. Our presenters will demonstrate how to use pictures in the pictorial books to stimulate pupils in their thinking process to understand contents which otherwise will be too difficult in word form. Parents will be able to see that pictures are in fact useful tools in imparting knowledge to the pupils, and not just as colourful decorations that sought to build up the thickness of a book.

I spoke, I wrote, I conquered

As our young Saints get exposed to a range of text types, it can get quite intimidating for some. It is crucial that our boys have the necessary thinking skills and able to interpret different text types appropriately. This includes understanding their structure and purpose. To nurture the skilled writer in your boy, we will learn strategies for effectively organizing writing in a logical, clear and precise manner.

Apart from writing skills, this workshop will also share strategies for developing the eloquent speaker in your boy. This includes understanding the purpose of their speech, their target audience and the context. The eloquent Saint is able to articulate ideas fluently and demonstrate non-verbal self-confidence through eye contact and poise. These life skills will put him in good stead for future challenges.
